Research Summary

My interests lie in the areas of applying modern biological tools and techniques, web 2.0 paradigm and vertical search technologies to help make life science research more efficient. With the enormous amounts of data being generated across basic and clinical research, as well as drug development novel approaches that make this data useful and accessible for the entire community are required. One of the key needs in modern biology is to be able to leverage and interpret huge quantities of large-scale biological data (gene and protein expression, SNP association and family studies, methylation, etc.). I am interested in approaches that leverage this combined data to provide a systematic view of biological events to researchers and clinicians. Our ultimate vision at NextBio is to build a community-driven open platform for intelligent search, collaboration and data sharing.

At NextBio I am leading product development, scientific computing and content teams. For the last decade I have been involved in developing scientific computing solutions for organizations involved in basic and clinical research and drug discovery. In the past I served as the Director of Bioinformatics Professional Services at Silicon Genetics. There my work involved developing and customizing solutions for the analysis, management and interpretation of high throughput data generated by genomic, proteomic and genotyping technologies. I joined Silicon Genetics as an early stage startup and worked with hundreds of academic institutions and commercial enterprises. Much of my lab research experience was obtained while doing research at Geoff Rosenfeld's lab at UCSD Howard Hughes Medical Institute where I studied transcriptional mechanisms of gene expression regulation during pituitary development.

Research Projects

  • Virtical search engine for life sciences - NextBio
NextBio's mission is to make the world's life sciences information universally accessible. Our goal is to empower researchers and clinicians to make new discoveries in science, find new and better cures to diseases, and work more collaboratively.

  • Toxicity studies using a combination of genotyping and gene expression technologies
I am interested in applying larges-scale measurement platforms for gene expression, DNA sequencing and genotyping in order to identify genetic markers predictive of patient's chemotherapy induced toxicity, ultimately leading to better treatment selection for cancer patients. Specific topics of interest include: Ovarian cancer chemotherapy induced toxicity; Lung cancer chemotherapy induced toxicity
