NextBio provides a state of the art scientific platform to aggregate and interpret large quantities of genomic data for research and clinical applications. Our products support the entire life cycle of genomic data in the private data center with an intuitive user interface designed especially for biologists and clinicians backed by a highly scalable, Big Data enterprise platform capable of analyzing petabytes of data in real-time. From instrument readouts to data interpretation for research and the clinic, NextBio products empower a paradigm shift in translational research and medicine.


NextBio contains the world's largest repository of curated and correlated public and private genomic data, including data from multiple public repositories of genomic studies and patient molecular profiles, up-to-date reference genomes, and clinical trial results. Diverse molecular data types from these resources are systematically processed, curated and integrated into our private data center-based platform. By running a unique set of algorithms on this aggregated content, we identify novel correlations that power the functionality of several applications. Users can also incorporate proprietary molecular or clinical data from individual patients, clinical trial cohorts or studies in cell lines and model organisms within highly secure domains. Interpreting results through NextBio algorithms in the context of this aggregated content enables users to generate unprecedented research and clinical findings.

Controlled Vocabularies

Sophisticated ontology infrastructure and tools enable our customers to standardize annotations around individual patients, as well as large studies. NextBio integrates public ontology resources with its own internal curation to provide the most comprehensive set of controlled vocabularies to our clients. In addition, we provide tools for each organization to customize ontologies to fit their internal needs.

Scalable SaaS Platform for Big-Data

NextBio products are delivered as a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS). NextBio uses single-instance multiple-tenant architecture, to provide a unique, secure domain for each of our clients. Our platform has been designed to scale to solve the Big Data challenge cost-effectively by using horizontal partitioning, stateless services, and commodity hardware. NextBio uses a scalable Services Oriented Architecture (SOA) where stateless services horizontally partition functionality into smaller components that are reused throughout the NextBio Platform. We use MapReduce with Apache Hadoop as our paradigm for scaling out computations.

Security and HIPAA

NextBio Clinical platform has successfully passed an independent 3rd party audit of NextBio's security controls, meeting HIPAA (the federally mandated Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) requirements. NextBio demonstrated the implementation of physical, technical, and administrative controls to assure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of electronic protected health information (ePHI) in its private data center-based NextBio Clinical platform. The automated logging of access to patient information, encryption of log parameters, real-time administrator audit facilities, and encryption of ePHI are a few key features that distinguish NextBio's implementation of HIPAA.

Other important features of NextBio's HIPAA implementation include:

  • Protection against any reasonably anticipated threats or hazards to the security or integrity of protected information.
  • Protection against any reasonably anticipated uses or disclosures of such information that are not permitted or required by the privacy rule.
  • Compliance by NextBio's workforce.
  • Customized authorization of access to ePHI by client organizations.
  • Real-time ePHI access report generation, enabling the client to immediately review who, what, and when ePHI was accessed; no delays requesting and waiting for logs.
  • Encrypted ePHI data.
  • Location of ePHI in Tier 1 Data Center using a provider that is SSAE16 Certified.
